A border town on the river Chiese, halfway between Mantua and Cremona. For more than three centuries a fortress of Venice, today the square with the Venetian loggia and the cathedral of Sant’Andrea.
Asola takes its name from the Latin «ansa», the bend of the river Chiese where it was founded. It placed itself under the Republic of Venice and for more than three centuries was its border fortress, until Napoleon arrived. On 28 April 1862 Garibaldi spoke to the people of Asola from the balcony of Palazzo Terzi.

The river that gave the town its name turned its millstones for centuries. The old mills are among the places to see.
